Feb. 23--St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center officials on Thursday announced the resignation of the hospital's top administrator. Tom Anderson, the hospital's president and chief executive officer who was hired in late 1999, no longer works at the hospital. A reporter was unable to immediately contact Anderson by telephone. Anderson commuted to his St. Mary-Corwin job from his Colorado Springs home. However, hospital officials think Anderson's permanent replacement should live in Pueblo. 'One of the ground rules will be (during the nationwide search) that the person lives in Pueblo,' said hospital spokesman Len Gregory. G. Philip Shaw of Griffin, Ga., has been named interim chief executive officer. His appointment will take effect on Monday when he will begin working at the hospital. Shaw is an executive with more than 30 years of leadership experience in health care finance and hospital operations who specializes in taking interim leadership roles, according to hospital spokeswoman Rochelle Kelly DeVargas.

Shaw has served as interim president and chief executive officer at the Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix, Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Austin Heart Hospital in Texas, Tucson Heart Hospital in Arizona and most recently, Lafayette Heart Hospital in Louisiana.

His St. Mary-Corwin position is his first with Centura Health, which operates 11 other hospitals in Colorado, along with eight senior living facilities, and Centura Health at Home service. Shaw holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Tennessee and graduated from the American Medical International Corporate College for Healthcare Executives. A national search is being launched to find a permanent president and chief executive officer. St. Mary-Corwin's board of trustees and medical staff will be involved in the selection process. No hiring timeline has been set. During Anderson's tenure, the hospital underwent a $59 million expansion. DeVargas said she anticipates that a public reception will be scheduled for Shaw.
