Kids confront parent's cancer

If you are a parent who has been diagnosed with cancer in the past two years, you may notice some changes in your child's behavior.

As they try to cope, children often refuse to talk about cancer or withdraw from interaction. Some become overly protective of their ill parent.

If you recognize any of these traits in your child or if your cancer is affecting your child's schoolwork, he may be able to benefit from a free support group offered by Centura Porter Adventist Hospital. The group is open to children between the ages of 7 and 15. It meets the second Saturday of each month through June.

Professionals in oncology and human relations help children cope and learn about cancer through art, sports and therapy.
